As I write this column, the temperatures are supposed to hit a sunny high of near 50 today and through the weekend. This mild weather is not helping the few farmers that are waiting for a hard freeze to get out the rest of their crop out of the fields. I am sure the snowmobilers are not too happy either. Other than having to clean up a muddy white dog after each walk, I am enjoying the mild weather.
Federal Government Shutdown
The biggest concern to our local farm population associated with the shutdown is the closing of the local FSA office. The shutdown has halted the processing of new applications for Market Facilitation Program payments, which are designed to provide a measure of relief from ongoing trade challenges. Because of that, they might need to have the deadline for that program extended. Processing farm loans for the coming year is also a concern, since much of the work takes place at local FSA offices.
Don’t Forget - Bruce Johnson; Celebration of Life
There will be a celebration of Bruce Johnson’s life here at the Stephenson County Farm Bureau in the Walsh Room from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 13th. We will have a brief time of sharing memories at 1:30 p.m. Cookies and beverages will be served. Andrea Johnson and Bruce’s sons David and Michael will be here. Join us.
Country Financial and the Stephenson County Farm Bureau are partnering to offer a crop seminar. The seminar is Tuesday, January 22nd, 2019, held at The Rafters in Lena IL. You have two opportunities to attend; either at lunch time (12:00 noon) or for dinner (5:00 p.m.). Since a meal is provided, registration is required and more details are available by calling your local Country Financial Representative.
On-the-Road Seminar – Motor Vehicle Rules for IL Farmers
Many of the questions that come through our office relate to on-the-farm trucking regulations. Kevin Rund and Kirby Wagner with the IL Farm Bureau will be here at our office at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, February 8th to present a two-hour seminar and answer your trucking questions. This event is co-sponsored by the Jo Daviess County Farm Bureau. Pre-registration is requested. Please call 815 232-3186 to register. The seminar is free, you do not need to be a Farm Bureau member to attend.
More trip details are rolling out each day. Bus prices are in and I am waiting on prices for a few itinerary items. We should know the Brewers/Cubs ticket dates on January 10th. Look for those flyers by January 14th.
Winter will return. Be aware of the changing road conditions, especially black ice. Drive safely and share the road!
